Library Column for August 30, 2017

September is just days away. The library has a new program we’d love to have kids attend. The Super Awesome Library Club which will meet each Wednesday from 3 – 4 pm in the library meeting room.  Students in grades 1 – 5 are welcome to join library staff for an after-school snack, stories and an activity.  Further questions, please contact the library.

Great Decisions, the local foreign policy discussion group will meet at the library Tuesday, September 5 from 4 – 5:30 pm to talk about the United States trade policy. Anyone in junior high and up is welcome to attend and listen, participate and learn about foreign policy.

Storytime will again be Thursday mornings at 10:30 am beginning September 14th. Storytime is approximately thirty minutes of stories, rhymes and songs followed by about thirty minutes of free play with our early learning toys. Storytime is geared for ages 2 – 4 but anyone is welcome to attend with their caregiver.

September is National Library Card month and everyone is encouraged to get a card, make sure their kids have cards and get them in good working condition.  The Arrowhead Library System held a contest earlier this summer and kids were encouraged to design a new library card.  The winning design has been printed on cards and anyone who wants a new kids’ card can get one for free during the month of September. If you would like the new kids’ card get it for free in September.

We want to encourage kids to use their library card so the library will waive the fines on children’s cards during the month of September. Visit the library, ask us to check children’s cards to waive fines. We want to eliminate as many barriers as we can that prevent children from using the library.  Make the library a regular part of your school year routine (actually we want you to make the library a regular part of your life, not just sometimes).

The Friends of the Library are in need of a volunteer to schedule volunteers and book sales.  If you have a couple of hours each month to find someone to staff the book sale, maybe help prepare the room for the sale then talk to Diane at the library.  It doesn’t take much time but really helps the staff. The September book sale will be Wednesday, September 27th from 3 – 5 pm.  That is the last book sale scheduled until we can find someone to take over the scheduling.  All sales are by donation with proceeds benefiting the Friends support of library programming.

Monday, September 25th at 6:00 pm the library will host Kathy and Leo Lara and the Music of Latin America for ages 10 – adult. Enjoy diverse sounds and stories from Latin American culture as they come to life with Leo and Kathy Lara. This program, sponsored by Arrowhead Library System, was funded in part or in whole with money from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
