Library Column for September 2, 2022

@ Your Library

Whew! Summer whizzed by so fast. Here we are at the beginning of September with the school year starting next week. I definitely hope we still have nice, beautiful weather for a while yet. The library will be closed on Monday, September 5th in observance of Labor Day. Then our school year hours will start. They are Monday – Wednesday 10 am – 8 pm, Thursday – Friday 10 am – 6 pm and Saturday 10 am – 3 pm.  Make the library a regular part of your school year routine.

Lorna Landvik and Sarah Stonich, Minnesota authors who cooled their heels throughout the pandemic are ready for a road trip and will be circling the Arrowhead Library System in September, visiting twenty libraries to share what they’ve been up to. They will be in Baudette, Tuesday, evening September 6th and will be at the International Falls Public Library on Wednesday, September 7th at 6:00 pm. Don’t miss hearing from these authors! This program, recommended for ages 14 and up was funded in part or in whole by a grant from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

All summer we had a wonderful time doing Libratory in person and exploring science, technology, engineering and math fun each week. We asked the summer participants if they preferred in person activities or take-home activities. Consensus was that take-home activities were easier during the school year. Beginning, Tuesday, September 13th we will provide a STEAM take-home activity for elementary students. It will be much easier to prepare kits if we know who is interested, so please call the library at 218-283-8051 (or stop by and sign up) if your child would like a Libratory bag each week, available on Tuesday afternoons. Any unclaimed bags will be available for pickup by anyone on Thursday.

Storytime at the library will continue on Thursday mornings at 10:30 beginning Thursday, September 15th. Storytime is approximately 30 minutes of stories, rhymes and songs followed by about 30 minutes of play time with our early learning STEAM toys. Each week we will explore a different topic of interest to preschoolers. Children ages 5 and under are encouraged to bring their caregivers to the library each week.

Do you enjoy listening to audio books? Then, check out our Playaway collection. We have some wonderful audiobooks available. Playaways are really cool, an entire audio book is stored in a format that doesn’t require an additional device to listen to the story and are about the size of a deck of cards, very easy to carry around and they will connect to car speakers with an auxiliary cable. We will even provide earbuds for listening if you need them. Take a look at the collection of titles and borrow one today.

The library lobby walls are looking bare. We’d love to have an artist with local connections share their art in either September/October or November/December. Stop by the library and talk with us about options for displaying your artwork in the library.
