International Falls Public Library Board of Trustees Meeting Minutes

June 12th, 2024

Present: Diane Adams – Library Director, Maggie Horning, Mona Johnson, Will Frank, Heather Weaver, Sasha Moss, Dick Peterson, and Mary Jo Winkel

Meeting was called to order at 4:30 pm by Frank.

Minutes – Johnson moved and Peterson seconded to approve the May 2024 minutes. All approved.

Bills – Winkel moved and Weaver seconded to approve the June 2024 bills. All approved.

Director’s Report – May circulation was good, we are now just 1% below year to date compared with 2023. The majority of May programming was visiting classes. We had 15 at the Barn Quilt program. Crafting Time consistently gets 4 – 5 ladies, but all are welcome. We are seeing more of the summer residents back than we’ve seen for several years. We also have a lot of temporary summer workers stopping in for temporary cards. So hopefully, we will have a busy summer. The first week has been odd as the Falls Schools were still in session on Monday and Tuesday and I think that threw people off. Libratory had 7 in attendance and there were 20 at storytime the first week. I’ll let you know how Big Play goes on Friday.

Charis Boyer is no longer working for the library and we have hired Lydia McDaniel as her replacement. She will start on Monday, June 10th.

We disposed of a lot of electronics at the community disposal event on June 8th. We continue to examine operations and try to keep things moving smoothly and efficiently and that has included getting rid of excess equipment.

Old Business: Summer reading is underway. So far about twenty folks have collected at least one free book. Weekly programming for youth is Libratory, Wednesdays at 11, storytime Thursdays at 10:30 and Big Play on Fridays from 10:30 – noon. Silent book club will continue monthly, crafters’ café will be alternate Tuesdays beginning June 11. Special programming includes Traveling Lantern Theater company on June 18th at 10 am followed by “Moving Words” three Minnesota Award winning authors at 2pm. Tuey the juggler on June 26th at 3:30 pm.

New Business: Peterson moved and Johnson seconded to accept the UWNEMN donation of $2000. All approved.

Winkel moved and Weaver seconded to approve a policy allowing the part-time staff hired prior to January 1, 2024 to get a payout of their ESST (formerly vacation time) and employees hired after that date will not get a payout of their remaining ESST.  All approved.

Frank led the director evaluation and signed copy of said evaluation for the files. Director then signed.

Friends of the Library book sale is Friday, June 7th from 11am – 1pm.

What are you reading? – Mona started Such a Fun Age  by Kiley Reid and Maggie recommended Finding Margaret Fuller by Allison Pataki, Dick read The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier, the young adult classic and American Kingpin: the epic hunt for the criminal mastermind behind the Silk Road by Nick Bilton. Will was reading The DaVinci Code  by Dan Brown and MaryJo recommended The Six: the untold story of America’s first women astronauts by Loren Grush, Heather was enjoying Gentle and Lowly by Dane Ortlund and the Stones Cry Out by Randall Price. Sasha highly recommends Immense World: how animal senses reveal the hidden realms around us by Ed Yong and Diane recommends Fur Trade Nation by Carl Gawboy.

The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, July 10th, 4:30 pm

Meeting adjourned at 5:15pm.
