Library Column for July 26, 2024

@ Your Library

It is the last Friday in July. Summer is moving quickly (but I’m not sure it is moving any faster than life in general). The library has two weeks of programming left. Next week will be our most exciting program of the summer. The Arrowhead Library System is pleased to present Peregrine Falcons with Jackie Fallon, a free program being offered at the library on Tuesday, July 30th at 3:30 pm. Join peregrine falcon researcher, Jackie Fallon, and her live birds for an up-close look at several types of raptors.  Participants will learn the past, present, and future of peregrine falcons in Minnesota, why they are important, and what you can do to help them survive in the 21st Century.  Make sure to bring a camera!  This free program is 45 minutes long and is family-friendly for ages 8 to adult!

Wednesday morning at 11 am we will offer Libratory, our elementary student STEAM programming, storytime on Thursday morning at 10:30 am and Big Play on Friday from 10:30 – noon. These regularly scheduled programs are a great way to encourage thinking and learning through playing this summer. Readers of all ages can continue to turn in reading logs through our first open Saturday in September for prize books. So don’t quit reading.

A bit of reading each day is a great way to exercise the brain and keep it learning and growing. And you can combine exercising your brain with your regular exercise routine by adding audio books. Download books to your phone and listen while you walk or run. Or stop by the library and borrow a Playaway to use when you exercise. They are lighter and smaller than many phones and can easily be tucked in a pocket or strapped to an arm. We have a wide range of titles from thrillers like The Golden Couple by Sarah Pekkanen, to historical fiction like The Exiles by Christina Baker Kline and top new titles like Summers at the Saint by Mary Kay Andrews.  The collection also includes a variety of non-fiction titles like Northland by Porter Fox, Funny Farm by Laurie Zaleski and Rescue: stories of survival from land and sea by a variety of authors.

Or challenge yourself to read a graphic tale, either fiction or non-fiction. We have a range of options from Lovely Muco! by Takayuki Mizushina or Akane-banashi by Yuki Seunaga to The Fox Maidens by Robin Ha to Inside the Mind of Sherlock Holmes by Cyril Lieron and Benoit Dahan. You can also explore economics through Economics in Wonderland by Robert Reich, true crime in Green River Killer by Jeff Jensen and Jonathan Case or Canadian History in Paying the Land by Joe Sacco. Graphic tales are both easier and harder to read. Pictures help tell the story which can make the reading easier, but pictures help tell the story so you have to make different parts of your brain work together to get the full details of the story.
