Library Column for August 30, 2024

@ Your Library

Happy Labor Day weekend! I hope the weather stays fine and that everyone can get outside and enjoy our beautiful location. Go walk the board walk, visit the cabin, swim in the lake, work in the garden, do whatever outside activity makes you happy and soak up those rays of sunshine.

And get plenty of sleep as the fall schedule begins on Tuesday! I hope to head into fall ready to read, learn and grow in my knowledge of local needs and wants that the library could address.

Elementary Fun! will begin on Wednesday, September 4 from 3- 4:30 pm. Elementary students are welcome to come and spend 90 minutes in simple activities. Each week will be a different activity ranging from crafts to puzzles to playing with cardboard and our really cool cardboard tools. A small snack will be provided. Please contact us with any questions. But we’d love to have your elementary aged children join us for fun, games and active learning.

Monday, September 9 from 6:30 – 8 will be the silent book club. Join us for a brief discussion of what you are reading, enjoy a treat and beverage then read. Nothing complicated, just time to read. All ages welcome, although ages 8 and under need adult accompaniment.

Tuesday, September 10 from 11 – 1 is Crafters’ Café. Bring your current project and enjoy conversation, a beverage and time to work. All crafters are welcome, whatever your project we can make room. Join us in the meeting room for this alternating Tuesday opportunity to work on those Christmas projects or whatever.

Storytime will begin on Thursday, September 12th at 10:30 am. Families with children under the age of 6 are welcome to come hear stories, do rhymes and sing songs for about thirty minutes. Then we offer about thirty minutes of free play with our early learning toys. Family will be the theme of stories the first week. Make this a regular part of your week, we’d love to have you here.

We’ll then repeat storytime on Saturday, September 14th at 10:30 am. Families that are unable to attend are Thursday are welcome to join us on the second Saturday of the month for storytime and playtime.

The September takeout craft is provided by the Arrowhead Library System and a grant from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. In April, Lynn Prouty presented a program on calligraphy looking at its history and practice. She has now assembled kits for takeout. Create a bookmark and begin learning the art of calligraphy with the supplies provided in these marvelous kits.

I’ll end with two books that are sticking with me. Finding Your Third Place: building happier communities (and making great friends along the way) by Richard Kyte is helping me think about what we do and how to encourage community building. What You are Looking for is in the Library by Michiko Aoyama is a novel translated from Japanese by Alison Watts and highlights the best of what libraries can be.
