Library Column for November 29, 2024

I hope everyone can enjoy the Home for the Holidays parade tonight. Tonight is the 30th anniversary of this fun event. Enjoy being outside and seeing bright lights, laugh together as a family and then borrow a holiday book or two to share with one another in the coziness of home.

Some suggested titles include the classics like How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr Seuss. Kids may have seen one or more of the movies, but have you ever read them the book. Ditto for Chris Van Allsburg’s The Polar Express or the classic book The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson. Read it together and then enjoy the movie together.

Newer titles to share include Santa’s First Christmas by Mac Barnett and Sydney Smith or Knock Knock Merry Christmas! By Rob Hodgson. Melanie Watt continues her adventures with Scaredy Squirrel in Scaredy Squirrel Gets Festive and Narwhal and Jelly celebrate in Happy Narwhalidays by Ben Clanton.

If you either don’t have children in your Christmas plans or just want some holiday books for yourself then try these new titles by favorite authors.  A Christmas Duet by Debbie Macomber, One Big Happy Family by Susan Mallery, The More the Terrier by David Rosenfelt, Blue Christmas Bones by Carolyn Haines or Santa’s Secret by Fern Michaels.

Three less well-known authors with new holiday titles include The Christmas Cottage by Davis Bunn, The Most Wonderful Crime of the Year by Ally Carter and Love You a Latke by Amanda Elliot.

Christmas is such a busy time of year that being intentional about adding in slower time, time to read together can allow us all to participate in more events as we aren’t as stressed and overwhelmed. Reading can be a very calming experience and allow everyone to sleep better and be more emotionally ready to handle the hubbub. Make a point to spend a few minutes before bed, reading together.

Be sure and check out our holiday cookbooks for wonderful meals to prepare, cookies to bake and desserts to make. So many yummy possibilities for all kinds of events and meals. We have a wonderful cookbook section to provide many options for delicious meals whether or not you are looking for holiday ideas. A handful of newer books include Very Good Bread by Melissa Weller and Let’s Make Bread by Ken Forkish for bread recipes. Explore the world of spices in A Whisper of Cardamom by Eleanor Ford. Enjoy Life’s Sweetest Moments by Dominique Ansel for stunning recipes and their stories and be practical and healthy with Cook Simply, Live Fully by Yasmin Fahr for ‘flexible, flavorful recipes for any mood.’

Please join us Tuesday, December 3rd at 5:00 pm for a presentation by author Cary Griffith about his boundary waters books Gunflint Burning and Gunflint Falling as well as his fictional work. This presentation made possible by a grant from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage fund is for teens and adults and one lucky attendee will receive a free Cary Griffith book.
