Library Column for December 27, 2024

@ Your Library

We hope your Christmas was merry and filled with great books and plenty of time to read! Include reading as a New Year’s resolution in 2025. Make the goal attainable, but adding reading to your life will keep your brain active, improve your empathy and can also lower your stress levels.

As the weather cools, it is time for the annual reminder to not put audio-visual materials in the outside drop if the temperature is going to be below zero. The plastics just can’t handle the cold temperatures. Please bring the items into the library to return. If you need additional time to get them back to us, please either call 218-283-8051 or email us at ifallslibrary@gmail.com to request a renewal. We want the materials returned in good condition and the outside drop can’t be hard on very cold items.

Planning a game night for New Year’s Eve? Stop by the library and take a look at our game collection which includes games for a wide range of ages, abilities and number of players. For the littlest ones just learning how to play games try “Count Your Chickens,” “The Sneaky Snacky Squirrel,” or “The Happy Marshmallow Game.” Elementary students will enjoy “I Spy Eagle Eye,”  “Mine Shift,” “Mancala” (for up to four players), “Magic Labyrinth,” or “Ice Cool.” Looking for a quiet evening just two of you then try “Carcassonne,” “Hive,” or the classic “Battleship.” Party games include “Pictionary,” “Telestrations,” “Wits and Wagers,” “Chameleon,” and “Sushi Go Party.” These are just some of the possibilities.

If you want to get outside in the New Year then don’t forget that we have skis and snowshoes in a wide range of sizes to loan out. We do need you to request them at least a day in advance as they aren’t stored in the building and can only retrieve needed items before we open for the day. Skis and snowshoes are loaned for a week with limited renewals as they have become popular.

Never fear, even though we have added a wide variety of things to loan to community members, we are still focused on provided amazing books to read and listen to for all ages and interests in the community. Stop in and see what is on the shelves whether new or old, thick or thin, pictures or not, we have something for everyone to enjoy in the last days of 2024 and early days of 2025.

We had a lot of fun with the 2024 Read Challenge of reading the alphabet either by author, title or topic (or some combination of all three) and we think you did too. We challenge everyone to read 25 books using our 25 prompts beginning January 1.

The library will close at 5 pm on Tuesday, December 31st, be closed on Wednesday, January 1st and reopen on Thursday, January 2nd at 10 am. Regular library hours are Monday – Wednesday 10 am – 8 pm, Thursday – Friday 10 am – 6 pm and Saturday 10 am – 3 pm.
