Library Column for May 8, 2019

@ Your Library

Spring is coming which means summer can’t be far behind. Plan to “Make Tracks to Your Library” this summer and participate in the summer reading program for everyone of all ages. Summer reading begins Monday, June 3.

Anticipating summer is definitely a big part of May, so here are a few books to get the anticipation levels even higher. Summer romances, while maybe not realistic, make us hopeful and excited for our own adventures. Summer Retreat by Sheila Roberts is all about summer on the coast with two sisters determined to find love again at the hotel owned by one of them. The Summer List by Amy Mason Doan is a combination coming-of-age story and homecoming after years away due to a shocking betrayal. Laura and Casey were inseparable but haven’t spoken in seventeen years. Now Laura is pulled home to a reunion she can’t escape.

Tragedy can either drive families apart or bring them closer than ever. The Summer that Made Us by Robyn Carr involves a family that gathers annually at the family house at a lake until an accidental drowning causes the house to be closed up, for good. New challenges make one member of the family want to bring everyone back together again even if that means opening up the house and facing the truth.

The coast of Massachusetts is the site of many summer adventures including historical fiction. Here are four newer titles all taking place in Nantucket and Cape Cod. Michelle Gable has two historical titles set on the coast of Massachusetts. The Summer I Met Jack, set in 1950 imagines the summer John F. Kennedy and Alicia Corning Clark met and became engaged. The Book of Summer takes place on a family compound that will soon fall into the sea after almost a century of living. Bess Codman must return to the house one last summer and pack it up.

Family secrets are at the heart of The Forever Summer by Jamie Brenner. Marin is confronted by a woman claiming to be her half-sister and seeking answers, Marin joins her on a journey to Cape Cod to meet family she didn’t know she had.

Nancy Thayer is the ‘queen of beach books’ and Secrets in Summer is set over the course of one memorable summer beginning Memorial day weekend on the glamorous island of Nantucket as year-round resident Darcy adjusts to new neighbors, including her ex-husband and his new family.

What is better than Beach Season? Four unforgettable stories with endless possibility by four authors including Lisa Jackson and Holly Chamberlin.
