April showers bring May flowers. Does that include snow showers? I am ready for green and spring and growing things. While we wait, here are some great new books to borrow. Catch up on titles by your favorite authors. These well-known, favorite authors all had new books sitting on our new shelves when I wrote the column. Taylor Jenkins Reid’s Carrie Soto is Back is a novel about the cost of greatness and what we ask of professional athletes. Jodi Picoult’s Mad Honey examines the choices of what we keep and what we discard from our past as we try to be who we think we are.
Thrillers are definitely popular and Brad Thor’s latest is Rising Tiger. America’s top spy, Scot Harvath is unleashed to deal with a nation-ending threat that has been building for many administrations, Scot quickly finds himself in danger. The Family Remains by Lisa Jewell is another riveting psychological thriller as murder, secrecy and death haunt all the characters. Secrets refuse to stay buried.
William Kent Krueger’s latest Cork O’Connor novel is Fox Creek and again set in the Boundary Waters. Brian Freeman has a new case for his detective Jonathan Stride in The Zero Night. Anne Perry has a new Elena Standish novel in A Truth to Lie For while J.D. Robb’s Eve Dallas finds herself trying to work out the details of a conspiracy of exploitation and evil in Desperation in Death. Murder at Black Oaks by Phillip Margolin continues the Robin Lockwood mysteries and Mike Lupica continues writing books with Robert B. Parker’s character Jesse Stone in Fallout.
Joyce Carol Oates has a new title set against the backdrop of child murders in affluent suburbs of Detroit in the waning days of the 1970’s in Babysitter. Author Anthony Horowitz continues to play himself in his mysteries as an author writing about a detective who hired him to write about his cases. The author in the book doesn’t want to write about the detective anymore, but finds himself needing the detective to prove that the author didn’t murder the theater critic of his new play in The Twist of a Knife.
The Thursday Murder Club is a group of residents in a retirement community who gather to discuss murder cold cases, but for the third time find themselves with a real murder in which to become involved. Richard Osman doesn’t miss a beat with the jokes and humor in The Bullet that Missed.
Stephanie Plum, Janet Evanovich’s bail bonds enforcement officer is going strong in Going Rogue: Rise and Shine Twenty-Nine. Inspector Rebus, the protagonist in Ian Rankin’s novels may have taken the law into his own hands one time too many in A Heart Full of Headstones. Robert Galbraith, pseudonym of J. K. Rowling, is the author of now six books in the Cormoran Strike series with the latest being The Ink Black Heart, a fiendishly clever mystery about a murdered cartoonist and a mysterious online figure.
