Library Column for February 14, 2025

@ Your Library

Happy Valentines Day! I hope you can find plenty to love in whatever you are reading. We have lots of great books to interest you. We’d love to have you stop by and take a look.

The next book prompt on the library 2025 reading challenge is to read about something on your Bucket list. Again, you are welcome to interpret this in whatever manner suits you. But I took it to mean read about something that will help me complete something on my bucket list. You could also interpret it to mean, read a title you really want to read. This prompt is a little harder to provide suggestions for.  Some possibilities include reading a book about a country you want to visit. Read a book about a hobby you want to learn. Please see library staff for recommendations specific to your bucket list.

The library is excited to announce that late last year we got a Knudson Family grant to purchase a new computer to store searchable files of the local newspapers. Backing up about six years, the library received money from a will. The library chose to use the money to purchase a large scanner. The newspaper collection at the library covers most of the last 100 years, is growing increasingly fragile and was not searchable. Attempts had been made over the years to index pieces of content. We have a fairly good birth, marriage and death index for some of the years. But finding specific local events required someone to have a fairly good idea of when that event occurred.

For the last five years we had someone scanning all the newspapers and using software to make the files searchable. The process is cumbersome, but doable. As the project was finishing up, we talked about options to make the project useable by the community. We decided the best thing to do was add a computer upstairs with the newspaper files on it. That computer is now available for use. It is attached to the printer (although we are still figuring out the best way to print individual articles). You are now welcome to come search for newspaper articles from back issues of The Daily Journal, The Rainy Lake Chronicles, The International Falls Press and the Border Budget. At this time, due to copyright issues we won’t be uploading these files to the Internet. You will need to come to the library to access the back issues of the paper.

The library will be closed on Monday, February 17th in observance of Presidents’ Day. This is a great weekend to reserve skis or snowshoes for pickup on Thursday, Friday or Saturday and spend some time outside. Regular hours will resume on Tuesday. The library is normally open Monday – Wednesday 10 am – 8 pm, Thursday – Friday 10 am – 6 pm and Saturday 10 am – 3 pm. If you don’t make it into the library when we are open, use your library card to access digital materials with Libby and Hoopla.
